A concert of Small Jazz Ensembles highlights two talented student groups. First to perform is Faux-Real, a group of young jazz musicians under the guidance of John Wheeler, who explore the question: “What is jazz?” With new arrangements by cutting edge rap artists, including a medley of works by Drake, and a swing version of a Kendrick Duckworth original, the ensemble offers a fresh new take on the art of improvisation. Also featured is a revamped version of the Herbie Hancock classic, “Cantaloupe Island.” The second group on the billing is led by Avery Sharpe presenting a program of jazz standards and originals.
