Want to share your perspective but don’t know where to start?
Whether you want to post on TikTok or pitch to a newspaper’s opinion section, this introductory workshop is meant to help you make the leap from idea to publishing. Journalist and educator Macarena Hernández will walk participants through the fundamentals of opinion writing, from generating strong ideas to structuring persuasive essays and preparing them for publication.
Macarena Hernández is a journalist, educator, and multimedia producer dedicated to helping people think critically and ethically about storytelling. Her work is rooted in the belief that owning your story is a form of power. Hernández has taught journalism as the Fred Hartman Distinguished Professor at Baylor University and the Victoria Advocate Endowed Professor in Humanities at the University of Houston–Victoria. With decades of experience covering border and education issues, writing about Texas, and reporting on national events like 9/11, she has seen firsthand how narratives shape public discourse and self-perception. Hernández’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and other national publications. She served as the Rio Grande Valley Border Bureau Chief for the San Antonio Express-News and was an editorial columnist and special projects reporter at The Dallas Morning News. Her video work has been featured on PBS Frontline and various media platforms, and her essays and columns have been anthologized in high school and college textbooks. Now a consultant, Hernández works with nonprofits, universities, school districts, and individuals to create opportunities for storytelling across genres and platforms.
This event is sponsored by the Latina/o Studies Program.
