The Williams Chamber Players present a world premiere with Allen Shawn’s Four Imaginary Folk Songs (2018). The work was composed for, and is dedicated to, Ronald Feldman, cello and Elizabeth Morse, harp. The four brief movements, alternately fast-slow-fast-slow, explore dovetailing modes between the instruments, suggesting elements of some Eastern European music.
Three faculty are performing for the first time with the ensemble: Charles Huang, oboe; Julian Müller, cello; and Paul La Rosa, Class of 2002, bass-baritone.
Paul La Rosa sings The Last Rose of Summer, one of Benjamin Britten’s many folk song arrangements. He also offers Frederick Keel’s Three Salt Water Ballads. Mr. La Rosa has sung with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Lyric Opera.
There is another side to Britten on offer: Phantasy Quartet for Oboe, Violin, Viola, & Cello, op. 2 (1932) featuring Charles Huang, oboe; Muneko Otani, violin; Ah Ling Neu, viola; Ronald Feldman, cello.
The final work of the evening is a quartet by Johannes Brahms – Piano Quartet in C Minor, op. 60 (1875) with Muneko Otani, violin; Ah Ling Neu, viola; Julian Müller, cello; Doris Stevenson, piano.
