Hopkins Forest will host a spring wildflower and botany walk Sunday, May 7th from 11:00 to 12:30. The program will be led by Williams College Biology Professor Joan Edwards, who has been studying plants and pollination in Hopkins Forest for more than two decades.
Early May is an especially good time to delve into the botanical wonders of the Northern Berkshires. During this period many “spring ephemeral” wildflowers are in bloom; these species–which include trillium, trout lily, violets, and toothwort–flower early to take advantage of the abundant light that reaches the forest floor before the trees leaf out. By June many of these flowers and their foliage will have faded from view. This program will give participants a chance to learn more about other local wild plants as well –including trees and shrubs.
The wildflower and botany walk is free and open to the public. It will begin at the Rosenburg Center, near the entrance to Hopkins Forest, and continue along some forested trails; so good footwear and outdoor gear are recommended. Hopkins Forest, owned and operated by Williams College, is located at 271 Northwest Hill Road in Williamstown.
