Watch the 1954 film Salt of the Earth at Images Cinema on Tuesday, October 5 at 7:30 PM and discuss it in a post-film talkback led by Dr. Matthew Gonzales, who is the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Latinx Literatures in the English Department at Williams College.

This classic labor film dramatizes a real labor strike that took place in 1951 at a mine in New Mexico, and it was produced by filmmakers who were blacklisted within the industry due to their presumed communist sympathies. Many of the actors in Salt of the Earth were actual mine workers and their families. Most theaters in the United States refused to show Salt of the Earth at the time of its release. So, join us for this rare treat of getting to watch Salt of the Earth on the big screen!

The event is free and open to the public. Since Images Cinema’s current capacity is 75, we suggest arriving by 7:15 PM in order to ensure you have a seat. Please contact Aly Corey (awc5 [at] williams [dot] edu) with any questions, and we hope to see you there!
