The Williams College Department of Music presents Wallace Roney Quintet on Friday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public.
As part of Williams Visiting Artist series, jazz superstar Wallace Roney appears with his group at Williams. An evocative ballad player, he can be fiery when playing uptempo. Mr. Roney has played with most of the jazz luminaries of the late 20th century, for instance as the trumpeter for one of the last editions of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He began recording as a leader in the late ’80s partnered with saxophonists Gary Thomas and Kenny Garrett. His other associations – with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few – leave little question about his reputation and credentials. In 2000, Mr. Roney took a creative turn toward funk and experimental post-bop. However, Mr. Roney has never fully retreated from straight-ahead jazz.
Wallace Roney is joined on the bandstand by bassist Buster Williams, drummer Lenny White, saxophonist Ben Solomon, and pianist Victor Gould.
