Verifying Sol LeWitt’s “Variations on Incomplete Open Cubes” by Lemmy Evans ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, February 15, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.

Abstract:  Sol LeWitt was an American conceptual artist who claimed his work was neither mathematical nor intellectual but intuitive.  However, his pieces often inspire mathematical analysis and exploration, and while completing his 1974 work “Variations on Incomplete Open Cubes,” consisting of 122 wood sculptures of open cubes, LeWitt consulted mathematicians to verify that he had indeed found the correct amount of structures.  How would we do this verification, both of the number and the form of each individual structure?
