Tiling with Dominos by Tommy Coyne ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Monday, April 17, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.
Abstract: What’s the most interesting question in tiling theory? It’s simple: “Can you tile a… with…?” What makes it engaging is that a solver can spend hundreds of hours devising a picture, but a reader can verify its validity in a matter of minutes. In this talk, we will tile exclusively with dominos, starting with obvious tilings and moving towards more complex tilings, while discussing the lemmas and theorems used behind the curtain to make these pictures possible.
