The Thomas Bergeron Quintet The First of All My Dreams
The Williams College Department of Music presents faculty member Thomas Bergeron with his quintet on Friday, Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. in Chapin Hall on the Williams College campus. This free event is open to the public.
Thomas Bergeron isn’t the first jazz musician to draw from his life in classical music, but his debut album The First of All My Dreams is as original as it is refreshing. The project is based around Mr. Bergeron’s belief that Debussy fans are inherently jazz fans, and jazz fans are inherently Debussy fans, whether they know it or not. He imagines Debussy living and composing his Preludes in the vibrant, young, cosmopolitan music scene of present-day Brooklyn. The result is a captivating and beautiful journey for the modern listener. Blending heady and highly refined music, Thomas spices his arrangements with sensitive and spontaneous improvisations, creating a brew to be savored. A true hybrid ensemble, thoroughly schooled in the traditions of both jazz and classical music, the members of the Thomas Bergeron Quintet have played in the most famous jazz clubs in the world as well as the most respected concert halls. Material from the new album will be featured on this performance as well as original music by Mr. Bergeron and music by Nadia Boulanger, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
