Founded in 1993 by artistic director Martin Santangelo and his wife Soledad Barrio, Noche Flamenca has developed into one of Spain’s most successful flamenco companies. Its mission is to maintain the essence, purity and integrity of one of the most complicated and mysterious of all art forms. All aspects of flamenco—dance, song and music—are given equal weight and are interrelated in Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal ambience that is the heart and soul of flamenco. Artistic Director Martin Santangelo, a resident of Madrid, studied with Ciro, Paco Romero, el Guito, Manolete and Alejandro Granados. He has performed throughout Spain and the U.S. appearing with Maria Benitez’s Teatro Flamenco, the Lincoln Center Festival of the Arts and Paco Romero’s Ballet Espanol. He also appeared in and choreographed a solo for Julie Taymor’s Juan Darien at Lincoln Center. He choreographed Romeo and Juliet at the Denver Theater Center and co-directed and choreographed Bodas de Sangre with Larry Kornfeld at SUNY Purchase. The Lady from the Sea is a new work based on Henrik Ibsen’s 1888 play of the same name.

These performances are made possible in part by the Lipp Family Fund for Performing Artists and by the W. Ford Schumann ‘50 Endowment for the Arts.
