The Ballot Problem by Muhammad Nausherwan Abbasi ’19, Monday, April 8, Mathematics Colloquium, 1 – 1:45 pm, Stetson Court Classroom 101
Abstract: The ballot problem deals with the following question: if two candidates A and B stand in an election and receive votes a and b respectively, then what is the probability that candidate A will be strictly ahead throughout the ballot count? I go through the history of the problem, the problem itself, as well as the geometric and combinatorics-related proofs used to solve more general versions of the problem.
