Trains, Boats, Birth & Death is the product of seven weeks of intensive training and classwork by the ten undergraduate members of the STUDIO’62 company. Under the direction of Artistic Program Director Kevin O’Rourke, Trains, Boats, Birth & Death showcases student work on four original projects and two short plays written by established playwrights. The evening of collaborative work encompasses puppetry, heightened language, a subway tunnel, a ferris wheel, and much more.
The ten company members of STUDIO’62 are involved as writers, directors, composers, designers, and performers, and have been mentored and supported by visiting guest artists and department staff. The plays and scenes will be performed by the student members of the STUDIO’62 company: Peter Duke ’21, Samori Etienne ’21, Caroline Fairweather ’20, Nicole Jones ’21, John Murphy ’21, Ibby Ouweleen ’21, Liam Ouweleen ’19, Jack Romans ’20, Fiona Selmi ’21 and Julia Tucher ’21.
Designed to foster deep learning alongside creative experimentation, STUDIO’62 provides students with an intensive, collaborative immersion in the art and practice of making theatre. The program consists of three major components: Masterclasses with professional artists, educators, and Williams College alumni; collaborative workshops with visiting artists; and independent projects overseen by STUDIO’62’s Artistic Program Director, Kevin O’Rourke ’78. Guests Artists from this summer’s program include: Margie Duffield ’85, John Feltch ’80, Erica Dankmeyer ’91, Kim Stauffer, Michael Izquierdo ’00, Mikaela Izquierdo, Betsy Aidem, Jessica Hecht, Michael Winther ’85, Ben Moss, Chris Kauffman, Joe Curnutte, Andrew Lazarow ’07, Jay Tarses ’62, and our resident company Hit the Lights. Structured to support and promote each individual student’s development and growth as a creative artist and maker, STUDIO’62 provides its participants with a rare and unique opportunity to explore what it’s like to commit oneself fully to the art form of theatre.
