Stochastic Modeling of Baseball: A Markov Chain Approach by Henry Juan ’25, Wednesday March 19, 1:00 – 1:50pm, North Science Building 015, Wachenheim, Statistics Colloquium
Abstract: The talk will explore the application of Markov models to baseball, providing valuable insight regarding player performance and game dynamics. By modeling baseball as a finite-state Markov Chain, transition probabilities can be derived between game states and used to simulate expected outcomes for unique lineup configurations. This probabilistic modeling approach allows for a deeper understanding of strategic optimization, in-game decision making, and the ever growing use of analytics in sports.
