Get outside and get to know our campus plants!

Join Felicity Purzycki, Landscape Ecology Coordinator, and Elise Leduc-Fleming, Hopkins Memorial Forest Manager, to study the spring phenology (the timing and patterns of flower and leaf emergence) of our campus plants. The program will also touch on important ecological roles and pollinator interactions of these plants, as well as opportunities to participate in citizen science related to phenological changes by submitting observations to iNaturalist.

This three part series will focus on different plants each session, to capture the different flowering and leafing schedule of a wide range of species. Sessions will be designed as stand alone programs, but given the different locations and species of interest, participants will continue to learn new information at each session. Attend one, or all!

  • Session 1: Early flowering trees and perennials. Friday, April 11, 2:30-3:30pm. Science quad (meet in between Clark Hall and Wachenheim)
  • Session 2: Earth week phenology. Monday, April 21, 9:00-10:00am. Mission Park (meet in front of Chapin Hall).
  • Session 3: Hopkins Forest perspective.* Friday, May 2, 4:00-5:30pm. Hopkins Memorial Forest (meet shuttle van on Park St. behind Paresky) *Registration required if you need a ride in the shuttle.

This spring phenology program series is free and open to everyone. No registration is required for the on campus sessions (April 11 and 21), but due to space limitations in the shuttle, we ask that you pre-register for the May 2 program, which is also part of the Forest Fridays program, at Hopkins Memorial Forest if you require a spot in the van.

For questions or more information, please contact Elise Leduc-Fleming at enl5@williams.edu or x4353.
