Williams in Africa (WiA) is a program designed to help to focus Williams College students on the developing world. It is hoped that the understanding gained by students who learn from their experiences in South Africa will help them to make life choices in whatever their chosen fields of study may be. The Department of Theatre and the Multicultural Center are sponsoring a “Theatre Making Winter Study” trip to Johannesburg, South Africa in January, 2007. Students from Williamstown will go to Johannesburg for three weeks to work with theatre students at the Market Lab Conservatory. During that time, classes will be given by the Lab instructors, and the students will start working on a theatre piece together. In March 2007, the students from The Market Lab will come to Williamstown to complete the piece and have instruction from Williams faculty. The collaboration will culminate with a performance in the Adams Memorial Theatre at the ‘62 Center for Theatre and Dance. “Shkehpani Room Six?” translates to “What Happened in Room Six?” in a South African township language. Performance dates are March 1 – 3, 2007, at 8 pm, and March 3, 2007, at 2 pm.
