This Sunday, at 11 am, April 23, “The “Second Hour” Education program at First Congregational Church, 908 Main Street, will be continuing a discussion about the Haystack Monument. The discussion will be facilitated by The Rev. Valerie Bailey Fischer, Chaplain to the College at Williams College. The discussion will follow a brief presentation by Rev. Valerie. The presentation and the discussion will reflect on the meaning of the monument, the history of foreign missions and problems, challenges and complexities related to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, founded in 1810. The discussion during Second Hour will also reflect on efforts by some Williams College students’ over the years to change the plaque by the statue to reflect the challenges and complexities to the narrative of the 19th foreign missions movement. The discussion will also reflect on this movement’s positive influence like education and health care and negative impact such as oppression against indigenous people in North America and Hawaii. All are welcome. For more information email Rev. Valerie at vb7@williams.edu.
