Please join the Psychology Dept. in welcoming Dr. Gabriel Kuperminc, Professor of Psychology & Public Health at Georgia State University, who is this year’s final speaker in the department’s series of 1960 Scholars Colloquiums. Dr. Kuperminc will present “Research Grounded in Community: Building Theory & Improving the Practice of Youth Development” on Wed., March 19, at 4 p.m., in Wachenheim 113.

A common thread in all of Dr. Kuperminc’s work is an interest in understanding how cultural factors play a role in developmental processes and health behavior. School and community-based programs are the laboratories for his work. In general, he engages in two types of research focused on 1) understanding processes of resilience and positive youth development in adolescence and 2) evaluating the effectiveness of community based prevention and health promotion programs. He also works with local youth-serving non-profit organizations, studying the effectiveness of prevention and youth development programs.

Public health related research projects have focused on understanding the effectiveness of identifying and providing brief interventions for persons at risk of substance abuse disorders, as well as evaluating the impact of community collaboration on improving population health.
