Proving We Can All Win by Chas Merrill ’24, Monday March 4, 1:00 – 1:50pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim, Mathematics Colloquium
Abstract: It is an old saying that when one wins, another loses. However, John Nash’s revolutionary theorem in game theory proves there is always a way for all the players of an n-person game to maximize their payout. This sounds too good to be true; how is it possible for everyone to win at the same time? In this talk we will prove Nash’s theorem of existence of equilibria in n-person games and discuss the many different applications it has, one of which won John Nash a Nobel prize in 1994.
