Predicting March Madness Round-of-64 Upsets by Maria Chapman ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, November 30, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.
Abstract: Can we predict rare events? Every year, millions of people create a bracket for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, only to find it busted after an unforeseen first-round upset. A Balance Optimization Subset Selection model using match-up statistics improves the accuracy of round-of-64 upset predictions compared to previous models.
