Multi-Stage “Simultaneous Search” by Chenyang Sun ’23, Mathematics Senior Thesis Defense, Monday, May 8, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.
Abstract: We study a class of portfolio choice problems faced by an individual simultaneously choosing among ranked, costly, stochastic options. Introduced by Chade and Smith in “Simultaneous Search”, this mathematical framework models a variety of decision-making problems, from a student simultaneously applying to colleges to a firm investing in multiple technologies. We generalize the existing framework by combining simultaneous and sequential aspects, give polynomial-time solutions for various decision-making problems that arise, and construct numerical simulations.
