Modeling Language Death and Dynamics by Angela Yu ’20, Mathematics Colloquium, pre-recorded
Abstract: This colloquium will explore a differential mathematical model of language competition and dynamics in both monolingual and bilingual contexts. We focus on a differential equations based model developed by Abrams and Strogatz, which considers competition between monolingual speakers of two competing languages over time. We then look at an application of this model which considers bilingual speakers and the stable coexistence of two similar languages.
