From Fisheries to Disease Outbreaks: Managing Ecosystems Under Multiple Administrative Jurisdictions by Prof. Julie Blackwood, Friday, February 22, Mathematics Faculty Seminar, 1 – 1:45 pm, Thompson Chemistry 206
Abstract: Spatially heterogeneous populations often fall under multiple administrative jurisdictions and levels of government, all of which may have differing objectives and availability of management resources. Such governance situations arise for many environmental and ecological issues including, for example, the management of pollutants, renewable natural resources such as fisheries, conservation of threatened and endangered species, and the control of invasive pest species. Similar governance issues also arise in the case of infectious disease outbreaks. In this talk, I will introduce this concept of “ecosystem federalism” and describe theoretical approaches for developing optimal solutions for governance of systems including fisheries and disease outbreaks.
