Logic in Math Education and Associated Academic Outcomes by Tommy Clarke ’25, Wednesday May 14, 1:00 – 1:50pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim, Mathematics Thesis Defense
Abstract: Logic plays a fundamental role in learning and understanding mathematics, but its role in math education has been widely contested, and it is not a standard part of curriculum in most American K-12 schools today. Previous research has also suggested that students who perform well in logical reasoning perform better in other academic areas. Through experiments with students at both the elementary and college level, we investigate whether there is an association specifically between students’ growth in logical reasoning and growth in quantitative reasoning or reading comprehension. We also offer recommendations for teachers who hope to bring logic into their classrooms.
