Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo

Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional classical ballet in parody form and en travesti, a.k.a. in drag, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo quickly went from late-late shows and Off-Off Broadway lofts to international stardom. A major critical essay by Arlene Croce in The New Yorker combined with rave reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice established the company as an artistic and popular success. The following year the international press caught on, a Richard Avedon photo essay appeared in Vogue, and the rest is history.
The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, present an inspired combination: their loving, scholarly knowledge of dance and the astonishing power and precision of their technique is leavened by a comic approach that makes an evening with them in the theatre unlike any other. Their repertory spans many of the great works of ballet history, and at the ’62 Center the program will include Swan Lake, Paquita, and Peter Anastos’ “many-layered masterpiece of parody” (New York Times) Go For Barocco, among other works.
