The recently convened 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party has established a new group of top political leaders and articulated guiding principles for virtually all domestic and foreign policies. What might we discern from the decisions of the Party Congress about key issues facing China in the coming years? Sam Crane, (Political Science) and Anne Reinhardt (History) will summarize some of the high points of the Congress and open the floor for discussion.

Sam Crane is the Edward S. Greenbaum 1910 Professor in Political Science. In recent years his writing and research have focused on ancient Chinese philosophy. He is the author of  Aidan’s Way, as well as Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Dao: Ancient Chinese Thought in Modern American Life,  which explores applications of Confucian and Daoist ideas to contemporary issues. His blog on ancient Chinese thought can be found at The Useless Tree, as well as in the book he published in 2019 out of that blog: Blogging China in the 21st Century: Philosophical, Historical, and Political Observations from The Useless Tree Blog.

Anne Reinhardt, professor of History and chair of Asian Studies Program, specializes in the modern history of China.  Her first book, Navigating Semi-Colonialism in China, examines Western and Japanese imperialism in China through steamship transport networks, addressing issues of sovereignty, economic development, and social space.  Her current book project Cultures of Capitalism in China and India, compares the role of nationalist entrepreneurs in processes of decolonization in mid-twentieth century China and India. She has conducted research for these projects in China, Taiwan, Japan, Britain, and India.

Where is China Headed? is part of the What in the World? Brown Bag Discussion Series sponsored by the Program in Global Studies.
