The virtuosity of Cloud Gate dancers has caused critics to ask, “When has one ever seen a company with such magical and beautiful body?” and rave that they “possess a control and articulation that verge on the superhuman.” Trained in tai chi, meditation, Chinese Opera movement, modern dance and ballet, the company performs a rich repertoire with roots in Asian myths, folklore, and aesthetics, but infused with a contemporary perspective. The repertory for this performance will include Tantalus, choreographed by Wu Kuo-chu, Ta-Ta for Now, choreographed by Huang Yi, Passage, choreographed by Bulareyaung Pagarlava, Wicked Fish, choreographed by Huang Yi, and The Wall, choreographed by Cheng Tsung-lung.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan was founded in 1973 as the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. Directed by internationally renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-Min, Cloud Gate transforms ancient aesthetics into thrilling modern celebrations of motion. In 1999, Lin Hwai-Min founded Cloud Gate 2 to foster young choreographers and develop education and outreach programs through its performances, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and residency projects on campuses and grass-root communities in Taiwan.

This performance is made possible by the W. Ford Schumann ‘50 Endowment for the Arts and the Lipp Family Fund for Performing Artists.
