Chinese Music Ensemble

The Williams College Department of Music presents the Chinese Music Ensemble, giving their premiere performance. The concert takes place in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3. This free event is open to the public.

Williams newest music ensemble is composed of six talented music students and ensemble director, Mr. Wang Guowei. “This concert is the debut of the Williams Chinese Music Ensemble, and we hope to introduce the vitality and rich variety of Chinese music to the students and community of Williams College and beyond.”

Among the Chinese instruments featured on this concert will be the erhu, zheng, dizi, hulusi, liuqin, Chinese percussion,  and piano. The group will perform pieces from various parts of China. Featured are folk songs displaying colorful regional characteristics from Heilongjiang, Jiangnan and Xinjiang. “Riding in the Countryside” highlights the music of Canton. Dance music of the Dai ethnic minority in southern Yunnan province is performed on the hulusi which is often referred to as “phoenix tail bamboo.” “Ballad of Yue Fei” retells the tragic story of Song dynasty national hero Yue Fei and is filled with sorrow and high drama by the zheng accompanied by piano. A piece for erhu with ensemble titled “Mongolian Horse Race” portrays a rousing equine contest across the Mongolian steppes.
