Best Rational Approximation Using Continued Fractions by Lily Shao ’20, Mathematics Colloquium, Monday, February 17, 1 – 1:45 pm
Abstract: This talk will explore the rational approximation of real numbers using continued fractions. We will introduce the idea of a convergent of a continued fraction, and what it means for a rational to be a “best approximation”. We will then prove that convergents are in fact best approximations, and show some interesting extensions.
