Under the direction of Mexican artist Hugo Peláez Goycochea, students have participated in a week-long workshop to create this altar for the Day of the Dead. It is made with natural and recyclable materials, symbolizing the indigenous and mestizo’s representation of the dead in artistic material form.  The use of seeds, corn and fruits reflects the agricultural heritage that has been preserved by indigenous communities. This intervention reminds us of the inseparable connection between the dead and the living, the cycles of life and our gratitude for the ephemeral life we are given.

Opening talk with Hugo Peláez Goycochea and students will be on November 1st, All Saints’ Day, and the altar will be on exhibit through November 8th on the first and second floor lobbies of Hollander Hall. Personal offerings are welcome.
