Have you read books about Zen, or been doing meditation on your own? Designed for those new to Zen or those looking for more depth, this half-day retreat allows you to experience Zen practice with two Buddhist teachers who are also Williams alums. Receive instruction in sitting and walking meditation and receive guidance on bringing the practice into your work, family, and relationships.

Zen Master Jok Um (Ken Kessel ’74) began studying with Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1975 and received transmission to teach in April 2017. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a psychotherapist, specializing in infant and early childhood mental health.

The Reverend Kanzan Jishin-sensei (Chuck Hotchkiss ’69) is a lineage holder in four lines of Japanese Zen, having completed Dharma Transmission with Shindo Jim Nowik of the White Plum Asanga. He is an artist/educator, who seeks out ways to bind his Zen practice and teaching with woods-going and community-oriented applications of the creative process.
