Sankofa draws on a rich artistic and cultural heritage to choreograph original material in the step tradition. Stepping is a unique art form, in that the movements of the body, such as stomping and hand percussion, come together to create a rhythmic sound. Often coupled with chanting or singing, stepping translates the entire body into one percussive instrument for music and dance. This show will feature pieces choreographed by past and current members of the group and will undoubtedly highlight the fundamental skills needed for stepping – precision, control, synchronization, improvisation and style!

In their latest production, Sankofa brings you the latest innovation on the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, Step in the Name of Love: A Malcolm and Lola Story. It’s Williamstown in 1985 as Malcolm and Lola, two star-crossed lovers, try to keep the peace and bridge the gap between their warring step teams. However, the Kofa Men and Kofa Ladies are sure that there can only be room for one step team in this town, which can only mean one thing…a BATTLE!! Who will win, and will Malcolm and Lola ever be able to love freely and step beyond the drama of their squads? Find out this May 8th and 9th at 8:30PM on the MainStage of the ’62 Center for Theater and Dance!
