Williams Brass Ensemble, led by Travis Dobson and Steve Felix, features soloists and brass groups. This end of the year concert presents the best in chamber brass music. The directors are also the principle arrangers for the group. The flexibility their arranging offers a huge range of possibilities, far beyond the limited stock material available to brass groups. The ensemble also welcomes special guest conductor Neil Freebern.
Inspired by great artworks and great fanfares, the arrangers have had their work cut out for them. Mussorgsky – Selections from Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Paul Kim ’24) is a great orchestral work inspired by painting and features many iconic brass moments. Debussy’s The Girl with the Flaxen Hair (arr. Felix) is similarly inspired by great painting.
Aaron Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man (arr. Dobson) enjoys a status in popular culture that is rare for a 20th-century piece. Its soaring lines are soul-stirring and inspiring. This fanfare is one that almost everyone has heard at some time, but if not, feels like they should have. Another giant of modern music, Joan Tower, crafted a very popular response to Copland with Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman (arr. Felix/Davis).
