Monk Legacy performs the music of Thelonious Monk with a piano-less septet that captures the spirit and sound of Monk through the incomparable playing of drummer Ben Riley and the unique arrangements and orchestrations of trumpeter/arranger Don Sickler. In addition to offering a completely fresh take on Monk’s perennial music, Riley’s Monk Legacy Septet features some of the major players on the current jazz scene, including saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, guitarist Freddie Bryant, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and saxophonist Bruce Williams.
Watch for the group’s new CD Memories of T to be released on the Concord label at the end of the month: “…exciting new jazz septet recording featuring inventive new arrangements of the classic compositions of one of the greatest composers in the history of jazz—Thelonious Monk. Led by Monk alumnus and master drummer Ben Riley. Riley’s rhythmic voice & laid-back style has earned him a reputation as one of the most significant drummers in jazz history. Arranged and Produced by five-time Grammy Award Winner Don Sickler. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder.”
