The Music Box, a one-woman show created by the groundbreaking Lebanese theatre artist Maya Zbib, is a performance about homes, usually performed in people’s homes. Based on a series of collected and imagined stories narrating incidents, habits, practices, truths, and possible truths about women and what ties them to their homes, the performance travels from the basement to the attic, throughout the various facets of the house and its dual nature of shelter/prison, in an attempt to touch upon a common dimension of intimacy. The Music Box was first , performed in September 2008, with 13 shows in 5 different houses in Beirut, and subsequently in May 2010 in Hakaya Festival, Jordan, and at the Avignon Festival Off in July 2011. It was originally performed in Arabic and French; this is the second time Maya Zbib will perform The Music Box in English. Zbib, a founding member of the Zoukak Theatre Company and Cultural Association in Beirut and a Rolex Protégé in Theatre under Peter Sellars, will be in residence in September for two and a half weeks, of guest lectures, workshops, and other integrated programming.
