An Introduction to the Analytic Class Number Formula by Nam Nguyen ’19, Wednesday, April 3, Stetson Court Classroom 101, Mathematics Colloquium

Abstract:  The solutions for Pell equations are closely related to the concept of binary quadratic form. A binary quadratic form is a polynomial with two variables and only include terms of degree two. There are infinitely many binary quadratic forms, but the number of equivalence classes for binary quadratic forms with negative discriminant is finite. Even though this number is not easy to compute, there is an interesting relationship between it and the Dirichlet L-function, which is captured by the Analytic Class Number Formula. This colloquium will introduce a proof for the Analytic Class Number Formula and discuss some implications derived from it.
