What are the dangers of using “Asian American” to label a multi-ethnic, multi-generational community?
On MLK Day, AASiA asks the Asian American community to think critically about our intersectional identities and to debunk the “model minority myth” that suggests Asian Americans are collectively socioeconomically privileged, obedient, and productive under a white cisheteropatriarchy. Asian American Resource Workshop (AARW)‘s Sticky Rice Project will be facilitating an evening workshop called “MODEL MINORITY MYTH/MUTINY” on Monday, January 21 at 6:30pm in Dodd Living Room. We will ask, how might an inclusive Asian American identity help dismantle racist hierarchies and align our community in solidarity with other communities of color?
This will be the first collaboration in a two-part political education series on issues within Asian American communities.
