MLK Day 2019
Mon, January 21st, 2019
8:30 am - 7:00 pm
- This event has passed.

On Monday, Jan 21 we are commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of events:
8:30am-12:30pm | Day of Service with community organizations in North Adams organized by CLiA
One service project will be weatherizing homes in the community. During this particularly cold week in January it is a good reminder how important a warm, cozy home is. Please join students and community members in weatherizing a number of homes to lower heating bills, reduce energy usage, and keep our neighbors warm. Email Sharif Rosen (sar4) by Friday the 18th to join a service project.
2:30pm-4pm | “Protecting the Dream: Creating Legacies of Activism at Williams” | Paresky Auditorium
An award-winning short documentary film that chronicles the grassroots activism that increased voter turnout during the 2016 elections in Florida. Voter suppression is one of the painful legacies of hundreds of years of systemic racism. Unless the story is told, it’s not going away. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, we set out to document the first presidential election since a 2013 Supreme Court ruling gutted the Voting Rights Act.
Followed by Remarks from Glynda Carr, Co-Founder, Higher Heights
Advocate and political strategist Glynda C. Carr is recognized for her innovative leadership style, commitment to expanding the civic participation of communities of color and advancing progressive public policies that build sustainable communities. Carr is the former Executive Director of Education Voters of New York, a leading independent voice for school reform in the state. She joined Education Voters in 2008 where she became New York’s youngest African-American woman to run a statewide advocacy organization. Carr is a contributor on The SPIN: All Women’s Media Panel and has appeared on Fox News Live, MSNBC and several other media outlets.
