For two consecutive Sundays, November 4 and November 11 at 8pm, archival producer and visual researcher Rich Remsberg will talk about his work, show clips, and present two of the films he has worked on recently. Conversation with Shawn Rosenheim, Williams College Professor of English, will follow each screening. Admission will be free.

North Adams resident (and Images Cinema member) Rich Remsberg is an Emmy Award-winning archival producer and visual researcher. His job is to provide the vintage film footage, photographs, and other material seen in documentary films.

You may have seen his work on the recent Netflix series Bobby Kennedy for President or Eugene Jarecki’s metaphoric roadtrip film on Elvis, The King. Or maybe the tragic sports documentaries Happy Valley and Love Means Zero, or one of the more than two dozen American Experience, American Masters, NOVA, or other PBS programs.

Whether creating an immersive atmosphere, offering evidence, or illuminating nuanced meaning, archival storytelling makes up the soul of nonfiction film.

Combing the holdings of public and commercial archives, private collectors, and his own well-stocked home, Rich’s process begins with finding the material, then working with the production for creative and editorial development, and finally clearing permission for use.
