Grappling With Our Histories: The Haystack Memorial, the 19th century Missions Movement and the Subjugation of Hawaii

Thursday Nov 1, 7 PM

WCMA

In this discussion, we will unpack and complicate the dominant historical narrative around the Haystack Monument. We will explore new lenses for looking at and understanding our histories and the ranges of ways we might interpret objects significant to Williams College.

This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition “’The Field is the World:’ Williams, Hawaiʻi, and Material Histories in the Making.” It is co-organized by WCMA staff, Valerie Bailey Fischer, Williams College Chaplain, Mark Longhurst, Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Williamstown, and Kailani Polzak, Assistant Professor of Art.
