The Triple Soap Bubble by Frank Morgan, Atwell Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, Williams College, Mathematics Faculty Seminar, Friday, November 18, 1 – 1:45pm, North Science Building 017, Wachenheim.

Abstract:  In 1884 Schwarz proved that a single round soap bubble is least-perimeter way to enclose a given volume.  In 2000, an international team, with major contributions by Williams faculty and students, proved that the familiar double soap bubble that forms when two bubbles come together is the least-perimeter way to enclose and separate two given volumes.  This May Milman and Neeman announced an amazing proof that the familiar triple soap bubble is the least-perimeter way to enclose and separate three given volumes.  And much more.  Many open questions remain.

This will be Prof. Morgan’s 1000th talk.
